In March 2023, the LMSYS team fine-tuned Llama 13B on 70,000 real ChatGPT conversations scraped from ShareGPT — and produced a model that human judges rated at 92% of ChatGPT quality. For $300 in compute. Over a weekend. Vicuna didn't just produce a good model; it proved that the open-source community could close the gap fast. Almost every subsequent model in this guide is a direct or indirect descendant of that insight.
Vicuna is released under CC BY NC 4.0. It cannot be used in commercial products, customer-facing services, or any revenue-generating application. For most production use cases, choose OpenChat 3.5, Starling 7B, or Nous Hermes 2 — all Apache 2.0. This page covers Vicuna for research, personal, and educational use.
To understand Vicuna, you need to understand what people believed in early 2023. The prevailing assumption was that truly capable chat models required vast proprietary datasets, enormous compute budgets, and specialised RLHF pipelines that only OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google could afford. Then, in a single month, three teams shattered that assumption in sequence.
The most enduring part of LMSYS's work is not Vicuna itself but the infrastructure built around it. MT-Bench and Chatbot Arena are both LMSYS creations, and both remain the primary evaluation frameworks used throughout this guide and the broader open-source AI community. Every benchmark score on every page of this guide traces directly back to the methodology LMSYS developed to validate Vicuna's claims.
Vicuna's training recipe was simple enough to fit in a blog post and reproduce on a weekend — which is exactly why it was so influential. The key innovations over Alpaca were in data quality, not training technique.
ShareGPT was a website where ChatGPT users publicly shared their conversations. The LMSYS team scraped approximately 70,000 of these conversations. Unlike Alpaca's single-turn synthetic instructions, ShareGPT conversations are:
LMSYS made several technical improvements over the basic instruction-tuning approach used in Alpaca:
A chat between a curious user and an artificial intelligence assistant.
The assistant gives helpful, detailed, and polite answers to the user's questions.

ASSISTANT: {assistant_response}</s>

Vicuna-1.5 was competitive at release in July 2023. By late 2023, the field had moved significantly. The table below contextualises where Vicuna stands relative to its contemporaries and successors.
| Model | Params | MT-Bench | Context | License | Era |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-3.5 Turbo | Unknown | 7.94 | 16K | Proprietary | — |
| Vicuna-13B v1.5 | 13B | 6.57 | 4K | CC BY NC | Jul 2023 |
| Vicuna-7B v1.5 | 7B | 6.17 | 4K | CC BY NC | Jul 2023 |
| Mistral 7B Instruct | 7B | 6.84 | 8K | Apache 2.0 | Oct 2023 |
| Zephyr 7B Beta | 7B | 7.34 | 8K | MIT | Oct 2023 |
| OpenChat 3.5 | 7B | 7.81 | 8K | Apache 2.0 | Nov 2023 |
| Starling 7B Alpha | 7B | 8.09 | 8K | Apache 2.0 | Nov 2023 |
| Llama 3 8B Instruct | 8B | 8.15 | 8K | Llama 3 | Apr 2024 |
Vicuna-7B at 6.17 MT-Bench is not a bad model; it's a March 2023 model measured against November 2023 successors built on top of what Vicuna proved possible. Every model above it in this table owes its existence, at least in part, to Vicuna's demonstration that ShareGPT-style fine-tuning works. Vicuna didn't fail to keep up — it pioneered the race it's now falling behind in.
Vicuna carries two non-commercial restrictions that stack on each other:
1. Llama 1 base (v1.0, v1.3): Meta's Llama 1 licence prohibited commercial use entirely. Any Vicuna version based on Llama 1 inherits this restriction regardless of what LMSYS intended.
2. ShareGPT training data: OpenAI's Terms of Service prohibit using ChatGPT outputs to train competing models. The ShareGPT conversations used to train Vicuna are ChatGPT outputs. Vicuna-1.5 attempts to address the base model issue by switching to Llama 2, but the ShareGPT training data problem remains. LMSYS acknowledges this and released Vicuna under CC BY NC 4.0 explicitly because of it.
Practical guidance: For research, personal projects, and educational use — Vicuna is fine. For anything commercial, customer-facing, or deployed in a business context, use OpenChat 3.5 or Starling 7B instead. Both achieve superior MT-Bench scores under Apache 2.0 licences.
