Reasoning Chain-of-Thought Math Mistral AI Open Weights
Magistral is Mistral AI's entry into the extended reasoning model category — the class of models that includes DeepSeek R1 and o1-style systems. Rather than answering immediately, Magistral generates an internal chain-of-thought ("thinking") before producing a final response. This produces significantly better performance on math, science, logic puzzles, coding problems, and any task that benefits from multi-step deliberation. Magistral Small (24B) is the open-weight variant and is one of the most capable reasoning models available for self-hosted deployment.
Magistral is the right choice when answer quality on hard problems matters more than response speed. Financial analysts building quantitative models, legal researchers analyzing complex case law, engineers debugging architectural problems, and data scientists working through statistical edge cases all benefit from the extra deliberation. It's slower than a standard instruct model — but for high-stakes analytical work, that tradeoff is often worth it.
Magistral Small (24B) needs a high-VRAM GPU — an RTX 3090 or 4090 (24GB) running at 4-bit quantization, or an A10G. It's at the upper end of homelab feasibility. If you have that hardware and want the best reasoning capability available without a cloud subscription, Magistral Small delivers.
| Model | Parameters | VRAM (4-bit) | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magistral Small | 24B | ~16GB | Open weights (Apache 2.0) |
| Magistral Medium | ~123B est. | N/A (API only) | Mistral API only |
Magistral Small needs at least a g5.2xlarge (24GB A10G) for comfortable float16 operation, or a g4dn.2xlarge (16GB) with 4-bit quantization. Reasoning models generate more tokens per query (the thinking trace), so expect higher per-query latency and token costs than standard instruct models:
ollama run magistral:24b-small-2506-q4_K_M
An A100 40GB handles Magistral Small in float16 comfortably. For multi-user production use, vLLM supports it:
vllm serve mistralai/Magistral-Small-2506 \
--max-model-len 32768
Note: reasoning models benefit from longer max-model-len settings to allow full thinking traces. Budget for 2–4× the context length of standard instruct deployments.
Both are reasoning models with chain-of-thought generation. DeepSeek R1 (671B MoE) is larger and generally stronger on math benchmarks. Magistral Small is more practically deployable on single-GPU hardware. For private deployment without a large server, Magistral Small is the easier starting point.
Depending on your serving setup, you can expose or suppress the thinking trace. For user-facing applications, you typically show only the final answer. The trace is available for debugging and transparency purposes.
Yes — the reasoning capability helps it synthesize information across multiple retrieved documents more coherently than a standard instruct model. Expect slower responses but better analytical depth.
