Tsinghua University and Zhipu AI's next-generation language model series. GLM-5 advances the GLM lineage with deeper reasoning, stronger multimodal integration, and extended context. Plan your private deployment today — hardware guidance, architecture overview, and upgrade path from GLM-4.
GLM-5 has been announced by Zhipu AI but full open-weight Ollama-compatible releases are not yet available at time of publication. This page documents what is known about the architecture, projected hardware requirements based on the GLM generation pattern, and how to plan your infrastructure now so deployment is immediate when models become available. We update this page as releases land.
To understand what GLM-5 represents, it helps to see the trajectory Tsinghua and Zhipu AI have established across successive GLM generations. Each release has followed a consistent pattern: significantly expanded parameter count in flagship variants, new capability dimensions added at each generation, and open-weight releases that lag the API releases by weeks to months.
GLM-1 through GLM-3 established the bilingual foundation. GLM-4 — currently the deployment-ready generation — introduced 128K context windows, the GLM-Z1 reasoning variant, GLM-4V vision capability, and meaningful benchmark improvements over the ChatGLM3 lineage. GLM-4-9B remains the strongest open-weight Chinese-first model available for self-hosted deployment at sub-10B scale.
GLM-5 continues this trajectory. Based on Zhipu AI's roadmap communications, developer previews, and the architectural patterns established in GLM-4, the next generation focuses on three dimensions: reasoning depth, multimodal coherence, and agentic capability. Understanding these priorities shapes hardware planning decisions today.

Zhipu AI has published roadmap information and developer previews that outline the capability dimensions GLM-5 targets. The following represents what is publicly known combined with reasonable inference from the GLM-4 architecture and the general trajectory of competitive frontier models.
GLM-4 introduced GLM-Z1 as a separate reasoning-focused variant. GLM-5 is expected to integrate extended thinking capability directly into the base model, similar to how DeepSeek-R1 approaches chain-of-thought reasoning. Longer internal reasoning chains before output generation.
GLM-4V added vision as a separate model variant. GLM-5 targets unified multimodal capability — text, images, and potentially video understanding within a single model architecture rather than separate vision-language model branches.
Projected to double or quadruple the GLM-4 context window from 128K tokens to 256K or beyond. Critical for processing full Chinese legal codices, multi-volume research documents, and complete codebases in a single inference pass.
Enhanced tool use, multi-step planning, and autonomous task execution. GLM-5 positions Zhipu AI's models for agentic workflows where the model orchestrates multi-turn interactions with external systems rather than responding to single prompts.
Each GLM generation has closed the gap between Chinese and English performance. GLM-5 is expected to approach true bilingual parity — matching strong English-first models while retaining the Chinese language advantages the GLM lineage is known for.
Architectural refinements expected to improve inference efficiency relative to parameter count. The GLM-4-9B already achieves competitive benchmarks at 9B parameters. GLM-5 aims to extend this — doing more with fewer parameters at the open-weight tier.
Based on the GLM-4 release pattern, GLM-5 is expected to launch in multiple variants addressing different deployment scenarios. Zhipu AI has consistently released both capability-focused and efficiency-focused variants within each generation.
The open-weight flagship for self-hosted deployment. If GLM-5 follows GLM-4's pattern, a 9B parameter open-weight model will anchor the accessible tier. Strong bilingual capability on single-GPU hardware.
Est. VRAM: ~10–12GB (Q4) Est. Context: 128–256K tokensGLM-4 introduced GLM-Z1 as a thinking-focused variant. GLM-5-Z1 or equivalent is expected to extend this with longer reasoning chains, better mathematical performance, and improved complex problem solving.
Est. VRAM: ~12–16GB (Q4) Est. Context: 256K+ tokensVision-language variant continuing the GLM-4V lineage. Expected to process images, charts, documents, and potentially video frames alongside text. Integrated rather than bolt-on multimodal architecture.
Est. VRAM: ~14–20GB (Q4) Est. Context: 128K+ tokensDeployment-ready now: While waiting for GLM-5 open-weight releases, GLM-4-9B is the correct production choice. The infrastructure you build for GLM-4 will carry forward to GLM-5 with a model swap — context window handling, API integration, system prompt architecture, and network configuration all remain valid across GLM generations.
Even before GLM-5 open-weight models are confirmed, hardware planning is worth doing now. The GLM generation pattern is consistent: each generation increases parameter count modestly (GLM-3 was 6B, GLM-4 is 9B, GLM-5 likely 9–12B for the accessible tier) while expanding context requirements significantly. Context is the primary driver of VRAM requirements beyond the base model weight.
| Scenario | Hardware | VRAM | GLM-4 Today | GLM-5 Readiness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget / Developer | RTX 3060 12GB | 12GB | GLM-4-9B Q4 | Likely sufficient for base tier |
| Small Team | RTX 4080 / 3090 | 16–24GB | GLM-4-9B FP16 | Strong readiness, all variants |
| Professional | RTX 4090 × 1 | 24GB | GLM-4-9B + Z1 | Excellent single-GPU coverage |
| Enterprise Small | A6000 / L40S | 48GB | GLM-4-9B all variants | Future-proof for 256K context |
| Enterprise Full | H100 80GB × 1–2 | 80–160GB | Any GLM-4 variant | Ready for any GLM-5 tier |
| Apple Silicon | M3 Max / M4 Max | 48–128GB unified | GLM-4-9B all variants | Strong readiness |
A 9B model at 4-bit quantization uses roughly 5–6GB for weights. A 256K context window can add 8–20GB of KV cache on top of that depending on implementation. If you plan to use GLM-5's extended context capability, size your VRAM for the cache, not just the model weights. The RTX 4090 24GB is the minimum sensible single-GPU for long-context workloads.
The privacy arguments that apply to GLM-4 become more compelling with GLM-5, not less. As the capability ceiling rises — longer context, stronger reasoning, multimodal analysis — the sensitivity of the documents organizations will want to process increases proportionally.
A model that can process a 256K token context is a model capable of reading an entire legal case file, a full financial audit trail, or a complete engineering specification. The value of keeping those documents out of cloud infrastructure grows in direct proportion to the model's ability to extract meaning from them. More capability means more sensitive documents flow through the pipeline. More sensitive documents mean the private deployment case is stronger, not weaker.
This is the trajectory we see across all frontier model families. As models become more capable of processing genuinely sensitive material — not just answering general questions but reasoning through confidential business intelligence, legal strategy, or proprietary technical design — the organizations deploying them responsibly are the ones running private infrastructure. GLM-5, when available, will be no different.
